Punjabi's were the first group of people from South Asia to start migrating to the United States more than a century ago. Their story of migration is full of adventure and overcoming many challenges that they faced. Now they are vibrant and successful American's adding great flavor to the beauty of their American culture and heritage. The Punjabi American Heritage Society was founded in 1993 with the purpose of creating a better understanding amongst different people living in this area and to educate their children about their roots. In the past ten years, they have organized many events in their community, including seven successful Punjabi American Festivals. This year their festival will highlight performances by world famous artists including: Jaspinder Narula from Bollywood, award winning singer Mr. A.S. Kang from the United Kingdom, Micky Narula from Punjab, India, and Dya Singh World Music Group from Australia (Mr. Singh was voted best male vocalist for 2000 in Australia). The festival will also feature a documentary, in English, which includes meeting with President Bush, titled "Discovering Sikh Americans", by Vinanti Sarkar of New York. In addition, hundreds of local artists, including students from California, will participate. They will also have performances from other cultures such as Irish, Mexican, and Gujarati dancers in addition to the very popular Bhangra and Malwai Giddha Dancers. The price for admission is $10.00, and children under five are free. There will be many cultural exhibits and plenty of Punjabi and South Asian food booths for all to enjoy.
